Jlooper – Pure Data Patch

Well this isn’t exactly a VST, but is actually a patch written in Pure Data for real-time 8 channel looping with filters, glitching fx, and crazy ring modulation. I used this on the first song on Yemaja and other tracks. It’s crazy to use, not easy to understand, and you need to have Pure Data installed and configured for it to work. I wrote it so long ago, I barely remember how to use it myself. but the basic idea is to be able to plug a guitar or whatever into the input on your computer and have 8 channels basically endless delays that can be manipulated and transformed in real-time, they also can be made, non-endless so it’s not really loops, but a totally insane delay fx with 8 simultaneous settings all going on at once.

If you don’t know, Pure Data is a brilliant semi-graphical programming environment written by Miller Puckette It’s not for everyone, but if you have time on your hands (a lot of time) you just might find it fun. If you can imagine it, you can make it with PD.

I’m not an expert programmer in PD, and my code is a bit sloppy and crazy, but the jlooper definitely makes some interesting sounds. Download it here. and If you don’t have it, you can download Pure Data Here.

Oh yeah, you can also record directly to wav file right from within the jlooper.

The Mothman 1000 is the free version of the Mothman 2000. It is a fully functioning plugin but lacks the digital delay, velocity sensitivity and only has a total of 32 patch memory slots instead of the 64 that are available on the Mothman 2000.

  • 2 Oscillators

This Mothman synth is a pretty simple little gem. But don’t let it’s simplicity fool you. It is a two oscillator, two LFO synth that uses standard subtractive synthesis.  What sets it apart is the three custom waveforms in the the two oscillators. One is a “diamond wave” which was created using FM synthesis and the waveform image resembles a diamond. Two is an 8 bit saw wave, its an awesome buzzy and gritty saw wave. Three is a woodwind wave, used to create cool sounding flutes and other wood instruments. The LFOs can be routed to either of the VCFs or VCAs. Some patches sound rather Juno 106 sounding. Over all it is gritty yet warm, and vintage sounding.

Mothman 2000

The Mothman 2000 is a very unique VSTi for windows that seamlessly combines 3 forms of synthesis to create a truly unique sounding and easy to use software synthesizer.

There are two main oscillators, the first is a standard waveform generator that has sine, saw, ramp, triangle, pulse, white noise, and pink noise. The other is a phase distortion oscillator, a technology pioneered by Casio in the 1980s for their unique CZ series of synthesizers that contains two separate waveform generators that each produce saw, square, pulse, double sine, saw-pulse and three resonant waveforms. There are VCFs on each oscillator and VCF1 features a dedicated ADSR section. The LFOs are what truly makes this synth unique, because the are actually LFO/HFOs, low and high frequency. The first is connected
to the Amp section of OSC1 and the second to the pitch of OSC2. At low oscillation settings they can be use for traditional LFO FX, yet at HFO settings they function as FM operators that can totally change the sound.
Using this combination of FM synthesis over top of PD and Analog style subtractive synthesis makes for some truly unique yet still musical and usable sounds. The logical and intuitive design make it very simple to program even if you don’t know a lot about synthesis. There are also ADSR envelope generator sections for each oscillators output that can allow you to create everything from huge warm pads to more staccato brass and piano sounds.
The Mothman 2000 features 32 built-in presets with 32 user slots for creating your own patches. At only $10 this plugin gives you a lot of bang for your buck!

  • 2 oscillators
  • Analog / Subtractive
  • Phase Distortion Synthesis
  • FM Synthesis
  • 2 LFOs which double as FM operators
  • Switchable Digital Stereo Delay
  • Switchable Velocity Sensitivity
  • Built-in Oscilloscope

CZ-3000 EmuThe Mothman Z-3000 is the newest sibling of the Mothman synthesizers and this one is the best one yet. It’s a 16 voice polyphonic synthesizer that features two Phase Distortion DCOs, two DCWs, and two DCAs all six featurethe famous 8 point envelope section that made the CZ synthesizer so famous. You have the ability to make some of the most complex waveforms you’ve ever heard.

It also has the stereo chorus, noise and LFO just like the original CZ-3000. Also, there’s an added switchable velocity feature that gives greater expression than the original CZ, and an added analog style filter on DCA2 to give even more sound options. You can also pan the different DCOs to give more stereo fx. But other than that, I kept it pretty faithful to the original synth. Programming is very similar to the original CZs, the only difference being that on each 8 stage envelope there is a “scale” feature, which acts like a master envelope control to quickly lower or raise the length of the envelope all around without changing each one individually. You can even use the original Casio CZ-3000 Manual to understand the concepts behind programming this VST.

There are 64 preset slots with 18 presets already created. The sound of this synth is very similar to the real thing. Real phase distortion synthesis is used, real eight point envelopes and a cool “Mothman” design make this synth a must have addition to your VST library.

This is a windows only VST, sorry mac users one day I will make a synth for you guys too.

To purchase the Mothman Z3000 just click the buy it now link below and after payment is completed a copy of the VST will be sent to you. The price is slightly higher than my other VSTs, but the amount of work I put into this one I think makes it worth it. $24.00 USD.  Here’s a little jingle a user created using the MMZ3000
